Connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets

We present a study on connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets by means of Monte Carlo simulation. We interpret our results using a contact-volume argument based on an effective single--particle cell model. It is commonly assumed that the percolation threshold of anisotropic objects scales as their inverse aspect ratio. While this rule has been shown to hold for rod-like particles, we find that for hard plate-like particles the percolation threshold is non-monotonic in the aspect ratio. Tuning the size and shape of nano-boehmites by a free-additive hydrothermal method

A synthetic procedure allowing the control of boehmite micro and nanoparticles is presented. The proposed hydrothermal synthetic procedure is based on the control of three reaction parameters, the pH and temperature of precipitation of xerogels and the water/xerogel ratio for the hydrothermal process, carried out at 200 °C for 48 h. Results obtained by measurements on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicate that at pH 5 micro or nanorods of controlled length between ca. 300 and 50 nm were obtained depending on the temperature of precipitation of the xerogel (25 or 100 °C) and the water/xerogel ratio used (1/1, 6/1, 15/1). Nanocrystalline boehmite (gamma-aluminium-oxyhydroxide) is a material of industrial importance, the functionality of which follows from its crystalline microstructure. A procedure for preparing boehmite nanoparticles, comprising the formation of a precipitate by the alkalization of an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate and subsequent hydrothermal aging, was previously elaborated. Ab initio computational study on the lattice thermal conductivity of Zintl clathrates [Si19P4]Cl4 and Na4[Al4Si19]

The lattice thermal conductivity of silicon clathrate framework Si23 and two Zintl clathrates, [Si19P4]Cl4 and Na4[Al4Si19], is investigated by using an iterative solution of the linearized Boltzmann transport equation in conjunction with ab initio lattice dynamical techniques. At 300 K, the lattice thermal conductivities for Si23, [Si19P4]Cl4, and Na4[Al4Si19] were found to be 43 W/(m K), 25 W/(m K), and 2 W/(m K), respectively. In the case of Na4[Al4Si19], the order-of-magnitude reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity was found to be mostly due to relaxation times and group velocities differing from Si23 and [Si19P4]Cl4. Abstract Three new Keggin polyoxometalate (POM)-based compounds linked to 3d metal complexes have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions: [Cu(phen)2]2{[Cu(phen)]2 [SiMo12O40(VO)2]} (1), {[Zn(phen)2]2[GeMo12O40(VO)2]}{[Zn(phen)2(H2O)]2 [GeMo12O40(VO)2]}·3H2O (2) and {[Co(phen)2]2[PMo12O40(VO)2]}{[Co(phen)2(OH)]2 [PMo12O40(VO)2]}·2.5H2O (3) (phen=1,10-phenanthroline). Polysiloxanes are useful materials because of their functionality, such as high thermal stability, electrical resistance, and hydrophobicity. In this regard, we studied palladium-catalyzed formation of iodo-and bromopolysiloxanes from two types of hydrosiloxanes, alpha,omega-dihydropoly(dimethylsiloxane) (1) and cyclotetra(hydromethylsiloxane) (2), and their reactions. This work provides an evaluation of the discrete anisotropy radiative transfer (DART) three-dimensional (3D) model in assessing the simulation of directional brightness temperatures (Tb) at both sensor and surface levels. Satellite imagery acquired with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), airborne imagery acquired with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) sensor and ground-based measurements collected over an agricultural area were used to evaluate the DART model at nadir views. Abstract The diffusion of the halogens fluorine, chlorine and bromine was measured in a hawaiitic melt from Mt. Etna at 500 MPa and 1.0 GPa, 1250 to 1450 °C at anhydrous conditions; the diffusion of F and Cl in the melt was also studied with about 3 wt% of dissolved water. Experiments were performed using the diffusion-couple technique in a piston cylinder.
